There is a phenomena known as blindsight, where people who are technically blind actually perform much better at visual recognition tests than would make sense. ![]() So, that might be involved in the 'snake' detection scenario you brought up. And the speed of that older primitive visual system is faster. But there is a secondary one through a much older part of the brain that does not involve the visual cortex. The brain actually has multiple pathways for visual recognition The primary one is through the visual cortex.
